A Consultative Approach to Digital Marketing Leads to Recognition and Strong Growth

Originally from Michigan, Shay Berman, Founder and President of Digital Resource, LLC, started honing his business skills at a young age by selling pencils and gum to fellow grade-schoolers. This entrepreneurial streak continued through college. While studying Advertising and Digital Marketing at Michigan State University, Berman owned and operated a landscaping business. After successfully growing that business to about 30 employees, Berman decided it was time to follow a life-long dream.

“I always wanted to live in Florida,” he said. “Growing up, I had family there and always saw it as paradise. It’s warm and I love the sun. I gave the landscaping company to my best friend and moved to South Florida. Not long after I made the move, I got a sales job working for my cousin’s marketing agency. I spent six months cold calling and going door to door. I got to a certain point where I was ready for something different. I thought about starting another landscaping company, but my dad encouraged me to start my own marketing agency. In April of 2014, that’s exactly what I did.”

From startup to second-stage

Berman started Digital Resource with three clients: his uncle’s business, his dad’s mattress store in Michigan and one of the most successful Petland locations in the country. For the first year and a half in business, Berman was a one-man show based out of his apartment. The only assistance he had was with the social media postings. He brought in a Ukrainian immigrant named Mike, who came to Berman’s house once a week to do social media postings for clients. Towards the end of 2015, after stretching himself super thin, Berman hired his first full time employee and never looked back.

“I met a consultant in the dental world,” Berman said. “He liked me and gave me a chance to work with one of his clients. Over time, our business grew exponentially in that industry. Today, we have over 250 dentists as clients.”

For Berman, one of his biggest challenges in the early stages of the business was learning to be confident that he knew what he was doing and that he knew more than most of the 30, 40, 50 and 60 year olds he was dealing with. Today, Berman is extremely confident in, not only what Digital Resource is selling, but also in what they’re not selling.

“We don’t sell marketing,” he said. “This approach has a lot to do with the value we bring to our customers. Instead, we sell business success and we use marketing to make that happen. We look at how our clients make money, what their margins are and really try to learn their business model. We use that information to see what can be done to bring them more leads and ultimately more customers. We take a consultative approach and use marketing techniques as tools. We also have one of the most vibrant social media presences of any agency across the country. We post up to eight times a day to give customers and prospective customers a good idea of who they’re going to be working with and to show them the great culture we have.”

Berman shared that the culture of the organization is defined by three unique, yet equally important values. The first is transparency. The second is efficiency and the importance of being direct. The third is to have fun. As Berman pointed out, “Work is not always a fun thing, but if there’s work that has to be done, we want this to be the place you to have fun doing it. We want people that have time to enjoy waking up every morning. We also live by Dan Gilbert’s Quicken Loans ISMs.”

Notable community contributions

In terms of philanthropic activities and community involvement, Digital Resource offers internships as often as they have desk space. They often have a few interns at a time and next year hope to have up to 15 interns. Berman is big on bringing in young talent and giving back to the community. They’re also involved in food-drives for Thanksgiving, supporting needy families for Christmas and volunteering their time to speak at various local high schools. Berman loves the startup culture taking root in South Florida and sees Florida, with its tremendous support of mom and pop type businesses, as an incredible place to do business.

What it means to be a Florida Companies to Watch Honoree

“We’ve been honored with a lot of things and we couldn’t be happier,” he said. “Florida Companies to Watch further solidified that we’re doing good things. It helps us recruit more talent and motivates the current team because their work is being recognized outside the company. I told our team that we would be one of these top companies and here we are, because they also believed in the vision.

In terms of why we were selected, I think a big part was our revenue growth. We also made number 262 on the Inc. 500 List. We’ve added a lot of new employees and our community support is strong. None of this would be possible without the hard work of our staff and our partners that send us business and our customers that trust us.”

Looking ahead, Berman, who loves to build things, is steadfast on growing the company. To that end, he’s focused on adding employees and has a goal of employing 100 people within the next three to four years. He prides himself on the fact that his workforce is so young and that they often employ people that, if working for a traditional marketing agency, wouldn’t normally have a chance to move up.

Advice for aspiring entrepreneurs

Berman offers up some great advice for aspiring entrepreneurs. “If you want to start your own business, the first thing you need to do is ask yourself why. Not everyone has the right reasons. If it’s not for building something that’s yours and being passionate about the work you do, it might not be the right fit. You have to be the business, not just an employee in your business. If you feel like you’re the type of person that will never give up and you’re willing to make your business your number one priority, then there’s no reason not to do it. Also, expect to work hard. I work 18-20 hours per day and at least five to six days per week. We wouldn’t be here if that time wasn’t put in. If you need more time to focus on your business, delegate out some personal life tasks like driving, shopping and/or cooking to maximize the time you have to focus on your business. Lastly, it’s important to be a strong leader. Be direct, always have a pulse on the veins of the company, know where problems are and how to fix them and work harder and smarter than everyone else around you.”
